Bergen

Bergen has been amazing, I think it is one of the most beautiful towns I've ever stayed in. It has everything I love... Fjords, mountains, very cute architecture, sculptures everywhere, no one littering. The weather has been up and down, we've had some beautiful sun and a few rainstorms in the past few days. So far the sightseeing I have done has included: Hiking up Mt Floyen and taking the cable car down, visiting Bergenhus (old forts and towers from the 1200s up to WWII), exploring Bryggen (picture below), eating smoked salmon at the fish market, drinking beers with Norwegian queers at the gay bar, and this morning I walked around outside of town and at Gamle Bergen (a model town of 19th century Bergen houses). Tomorrow, my last day here, I plan to visit the cultural museum and Damsgard Manor (which supposedly has a great garden).

I have also really enjoyed just getting a taste of Bergen from the inside, going out or staying in with Tam and Hallvard, playing chess in cafes, eating lots and lots of Norwegian waffles and noticing the small quirky differences between here and the US. Tonight we went out to a "quiz", where local bars have trivia challenges to win prizes. Unfortunately, tonight's was especially hard because it was in Norwegian and included a lot of Norwegian history in the mix of pop culture. Still fun though, even though we lost by a lot! Hallvard also bought a bunch of types of Hansa, the local beer, for me to sample, so I'm making headway on goal number one.

I have heard complaints about posting comments on here.... just send me an email if you can't figure it out! Parisa, you should be able to comment if you sign in with your google username and password though.

Lots of love!!

Houses in Bergen. Everything is impossibly cute.

Taraneh drags Tam and Hallvard to Bergen's gay bar, Fincken. This is my "Going out in Europe" outfit.

The best hosts ever, being adorable in front of the entrance to the Floibanen Funicular. We walked to the top and took the funicular down.

  1. Taraneh, I LOVE your pictures!!! Everything looks incredibly adorable and cute and I pretty much expect Belle from beauty and the beast to be dancing around the cottages with you.
It sounds like you're having a great time!! I'm so glad. I didn't realize there would be so many fun things to do in a little town. Keep on drinkin' those European beers! And props on climbing a mountain.
